Whew — I'm just glad we didn't have to settle the copy-editing kerfuffle with a cage match in front of the old High Country News office building, the way we used to do. It's really just too hot for that kind of thing. And frankly, the U.S. could use more descriptive and colorful place names than something as mundane as "Lees Ferry." Especially since there are still Mike Lees bloviating about the country and I would rather not be reminded of their continued existence.

As a side note, we do not make nearly as much use of excellent words like "kerfuffle" as we should. Perhaps we could start a petition to rename Lees Ferry "Kerfuffles Landing" or "Wankadoodle Crossing" or something, though I'm afraid that last word sounds too much like one of those dangerously cute and seriously inbred brand-new designer puppy-dog breeds. "Yes, this is Precious Little Mister Fluffermuffer; we really wanted to get a Kerfuffle's wankadoodle, they're just so cute — no, he won't bite, at least we hope not, because we don't believe in giving our precious poopsies any kind of vaccine, including those nasty rabies shots. ... Oops! Too late. Sorry about your finger and all the blood, but please don't drip all over the adorable little tuxedo I knitted for my darling little fur baby. Oh, you're leaving already? Goodbye!"

I hit like to agree with your feelings regarding the whole clothe the fur babies thing! I don't get it.

My mother's mother & her third/fourth/who knows which husband had two horrid little chihuahuas they dressed up & took everywhere. We kids didn't know them well at all & were more than slightly dismayed when we spent a couple days with them in Texas, I think. They had no real interest in us but we dragged along behind them & their well-dressed doggies everywhere, pretending we were invisible. We went to some museum, where Grandma Parker had Princess dressed up in a little princess outfit with a little sparkly crown, while Grandpa Bob had Chico decked out in a blue sailor's outfit with a little sailor hat with a ribbon, and they spent the whole time talking to them rather than us ("Lookie thar, Chico, lookit the purty paintin, now ain't that nice an' purty?") When they split up, they went to court over custody of the two dogs. I have since met delightful chihuahuas, but Chico & Princess used to bite our ankles whenever we got up to go to the bathroom at night — and they would scold for disturbing their darlings' much-needed rest by waking them up and letting them bite us. I am sure the poor critters were psychologically damaged by all the outfits they had to wear — in a really hot climate, too!

There had to be much psychological damage there by ALL the parties! It must have been tough - you learned the hard way "relationships" are difficult to say the least!

I love my animals because of who and what they are - quite honestly, because they are NOT human (more so these days).

AMEN to that! THANKS!

The heck with all that interesting info about lees Lee lee's ferry! I finally understand after living in Colo in 70's and 80's (and then moving to AZ) why the mormons just seemed like normal conservatives. In AZ and Utah the insurrectionists abound, with a long history of hating government instead of being part a of it.

Today seems to be my "share" day! This one is important to anyone who believes we need to have areas of Wilderness" without roads, ATVs, logging, grazing, and mining!

""Understand what the hurry is. A movement that believed it would hold power forever wouldn’t bother with this. It would take its time and build durable rules. But that’s not this administration. They’re looters. They’ve gone looking for the kind of damage a future administration can’t easily undo, and they’ve found it in this wilderness waiting room. Roads and saws through recommended wilderness don’t just suspend protection, they erase the eligibility, and erased eligibility is the rare political act that outlives the people who commit it.""
