Well, this is just a shitstorm of bad news. Seems like our hope may hinge on the Republicans in congress who are retiring and are willing to stand up against some of these cuts. And perhaps a 2026 tiny blue wave washing up. Have mercy...

Also, opening shot is a doozy.

If states have to manage “National” parks they should receive all the revenue from them.

In my reading of the Trump/Voight budget proposal I noticed Voight kept referencing Federalism to validate the cuts. Saying states are in a better position to manage things like natural resources, health care, education, and social safety net programs like rent, heating and day care assistance. States are already critically underfunded with little to no appetite or means to raise taxes significantly. If the federal government shifts programs to the states they should legally shift funding to the states as well.

Why don't they quit playing around and just rename the House Natural Resources Committee the House Disposable Resources Conspiracy, since by 2028 there will be nothing left worth saving, and certainly nothing with any trace of Nature left in it? The GOP (aka the Grabby Ol' Party — motto: "Meum habeo, Iacobe, de te doleo," or "I got mine, Jack, too bad about you") has no intention of ever stopping on its own, because if it ever let power slip from its slimy Gollum fingers, some Very Important People might have to face Consequences, and heaven forbid the oligarchs and their fanatical batshit minions should have to play by any rules of any kind whatsoever. We as a nation so far beyond fcked there are no words for it. Except the kind Jonathan is generally too polite to use in his Substack but that we all know must be churning around in his brain; sometimes I can hear the buzzing sound coming through my laptop, like a swarm of angry bees. Thanks for laying out all the crap so clearly, though. At least we can get an idea of what kind of icky stuff we're about to step into.
